How much water do you use in your home? Conserving water is important if you want to save money and save the environment at the same time.
CHECK FOR LEAKS
Look for drips from faucets and puddles of water around your water heater. Check the toilet by adding a bit of food coloring into the tank. If the bowl changes color within 30 minutes of no flushing, it has a leak. Read your meter, use no water for two hours and read it again. If the numbers aren't the same, there is a hidden leak somewhere.
INSTALL NEW HARDWARE
New showerheads and low-flow faucets are inexpensive and save gallons of water each time you shower or do the dishes.
LIMIT YOUR SHOWERS
Showers use up to 10 gallons of water per minute. Spending more time than you need to under the hot water could be wasting gallons of water, not to mention lots of your dollars.
ADD MULCH TO YOUR YARD
Adding mulch around your trees and plants help them retain moisture. Doing so means you won't need to water your plants as often.
PAY ATTENTION TO SPRINKLER PLACEMENT
Sprinklers that are too close to the house or driveway mean water isn't getting to where it needs to. You should also avoid watering on windy days.
